The Golf Cart’s Electrical System Is Just That: A Comprehensive System.

The Golf Cart’s Electrical System Is Just That: A Comprehensive System.

The Golf Cart’s Electrical System Is Just That: A Comprehensive System. What do I mean when I make that statement? Let’s liken it to the automobile’s starting system. There are several components involved when you start your car. There is the ignition switch for you to turn the key and the key itself; the wiring from the ignition switch thru a safety neutral device that prevents you from starting the car in gear; the wiring from the safety neutral device to the starter solenoid switch; the battery and the starter motor and the battery cables to take the current to the starter motor and return back to the battery on the ground side. It is a comprehensive system which needs each and every part to function properly in order for your bride not to fuss at you because the car won’t start! :0)

Now let’s ponder for a moment the same principle likened to a nice powerful hot shower. When you enjoy those nice hot showers you are enjoying them due to a comprehensive system. First you have a deep well to get the water from. Then you have a massive two horse power pump at the well to deliver the water from the well to your house. Next is the pipe for the water to flow to the cold valve side of the shower and to the hot water heater and then to the hot valve side of the shower.

Let’s not forget the powerful multi application shower head that we bought. Now we put on our birthday suit and enjoy a nice, powerful, hot, relaxing shower. We can do this because each and every piece of the whole (comprehensive system) contributes to the process.

Our golf carts are the same way. We have the batteries, battery cables, power solenoid, controller assembly and the electric drive motor. Each piece makes up the electrical system as a comprehensive system that enables us to get on the cart, turn the key, push the pedal and go! The Golf Cart’s Electrical System Is Just That: A Comprehensive System. Each part is just as important as the other. The batteries are no more important than the battery cables that carry the current. And the solenoid is no less important than the controller assembly. Each part must contribute in order for the system to work.

In our example of a powerful hot shower what might we expect if we only used 1/2” pipe from the well to the house? Certainly not the same pressure that we would receive from 3/4” or still yet, 1” pipe? And what good would it be if we used 1” pipe and then installed a 1/2 horse power pump? If you’ve ever experienced a shower from situations like these then you understand the importance of each piece of the puzzle being upgraded to match the others. You see where we’re going with this?

The Golf Cart’s Electrical System Is Just That: A Comprehensive System.

I know I have repeated myself but this is probably one of the if not the most misunderstood and underrated concept when it comes to upgrading golf carts. Fellows come into our store and want to install a higher amp controller on their golf cart. Once I understand what they want to do I then start asking them if they are going to upgrade the system or just the controller. They’ll spend six hundred bucks on a h.d. high amp controller and balk at the idea of a two hundred dollar battery cable upgrade.

Now remember that the golf cart’s electrical system is a comprehensive system with many different parts. The controller is the well pump with the electric motor being the shower head. Again, if you upgrade the controller you need to upgrade the battery cables, power solenoid, pre-charge resistor, solenoid coil, anti spike diode and maybe even the drive motor depending on your application.

BatteryCables

I need to finish with a word of caution. Ok, maybe a few words instead of just one :0). When you lift the golf cart and place huge wheels & tires on you are going to place a major burden on the electrical system. It will now take a massive amount of current to start the monster in motion and keep it in motion. Having said that you need to contemplate how you are going to compensate for the lift and then ask yourself are you going with a rear seat as well? That’s more weight and will require more current.

Those factory six gauge battery cables are going to be a lot like the 1/2” pipe we spoke about earlier. You’ll need more power! Scotty! We need more power and we’ll want to upgrade the cables and the power solenoid as well as an upgraded controller assembly. Depending on the state of the existing batteries we might even consider a new fresh set of Trojan batteries as well.

This article was inspired by two different golf carts that we have in our dealership’s service department as we speak.

This article was inspired by two different golf carts that we have in our dealership’s service department as we speak. One of them is a lifted 4 passenger Txt Series golf cart with a melted controller, power solenoid, melted fnr switch and a few melted battery cable connections. We advised the customer to upgrade the controller, solenoid, motor and battery cables. He didn’t want to spend that kind of money.

What? You shouldn’t have the lifted golf cart if you aren’t willing to fix it properly. He had us use standard factory oem parts that were used when the golf cart was a non-lifted 2 passenger cart! Folks, those repairs are not going to last! The electrical system on that golf cart is only as strong as its weakest link! It will be just a matter of time before some piece of the system can’t hold up to the high demand for current flow due to the big wheels and tires on a lifted golf cart hauling four people. Can you smell something burning while driving this cart…?

The other cart is a lifted 4 passenger Ezgo Txt with a PDS drive system drive. Same Bat time and same Bat channel… Ground hog day all over again. Melted controller, melted battery cable connections and a melted power solenoid contactor. This golf cart already had the battery cable upgrade. After consulting with Roger Cramer of Nivel’s tech department we recommended a complete system upgrade. A hd high amp controller, high amperage contactor with silver contacts and a hd upgraded electric drive motor. This fellow understood this whole concept of his golf cart’s electrical system is just that: a comprehensive system and that the whole system requires upgrading, not just one component.

These are things to consider when thinking about altering the original design of your golf cart for the golf cart’s electrical system is just that: a comprehensive system. And each component in the system will need upgrading right a long with every other part of the comprehensive system. That’s my take, what’s yours? MKR
